Minister of Energy and Mines Mohamed Arkab on Monday urged the countries of the northern shore of the Mediterranean to support efforts to narrow the energy development gap in the region, the ministry said in a statement.

Speaking at the 3rd Ministerial Conference of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) on energy, which was held by videoconference, Arkab highlighted the need to take into account national means and circumstances in the design and implementation of energy policies, according to the same source.
In this regard, the minister called for a “constructive dialogue between all the partners and the support of the North shore countries in terms of financing, technology transfer and capacity building, in order to reduce the existing development gap.”
Arkab also recalled the importance of energy, energy transition and post-Covid-19 recovery.

Cooperation in the energy sector constitutes “an essential segment in the partnership between the two shores to guarantee stability and mutual prosperity through a secure and continuous supply, requiring colossal investments upstream,” he added.
The minister also presented the main content of the reforms undertaken by Algeria in this area through the promulgation of the new Law on Hydrocarbons. Algeria is also willing to achieve energy transition to diversify the energy mix and improve the gains of energy efficiency.

Arkab concluded by reaffirming Algeria’s role and position as a “reliable” energy supplier and the importance of connecting the electricity network between the two shores.
At the meeting, participants reviewed the achievements since the 2nd Ministerial Conference in 2016 and approved a Joint Ministerial Declaration on Energy, the statement added.
