The visit on 28 July of Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad Ramtane Lamamra to Ethiopia, as part of a trip in the region, aroused great interest in the Ethiopian press which welcomed the two countries’ commitment to “strengthening their longstanding historical relations.”
Under the headline “Ethiopia and Algeria agree to strengthen their ties,” the Ethiopian news agency ENA, according to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, welcomed Wednesday “the willingness to strengthen the longstanding historical relations between the two nations.”
During his visit to Ethiopia, in his capacity as personal envoy of President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Lamamra expressed “his country’s willingness to strengthen the longstanding bilateral relations between the two countries,” and Algeria’s hope to host Ethiopian Airlines in Algiers, said the press.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Demeke Mekonnen seized the opportunity to congratulate his Algerian counterpart for “the success of the elections in Algeria” and to express Ethiopia’s will to “consolidate the relations between the two nations in the forthcoming years,” according to ENA.
In this respect, under the headline “Algeria and Ethiopia agree to build a multifaceted cooperation,” the audiovisual media outlet “Fana Broadcasting” (FBC) praised the commitment of the two countries to “build a multifaceted cooperation and strengthen the partnership at the regional level.”
In addition to the bilateral cooperation, the two sides “stressed the necessity of playing jointly an important role within the African Union (AU) for the well-being of the region and beyond,” said FBC.
Lamamra’s visit to Ethiopia was also broached by the electronic newspapers “Ethiopia Monitor” and “Addis Standard”. The latter published an article prepared by Kenyan media “Nation” devoted to the trip of Ramtane Lamamra in the region under the headline “Sudan welcomes Algeria’s initiative for the holding of direct meeting on Nile Dam.”
In its article, “Ethiopia Monitor” shed light on Algeria’s will to “strengthen trade, investments and diplomatic relations with Ethiopia, pointing out that Algeria “is one of the main strategic partners of Ethiopia since the two countries established diplomatic relations in late 1960s.”
The online newspaper “Addis Standard” dealt with the initiative of Algeria, welcomed by Khartoum, for the holding of a direct meeting on Nile Dam.
